A Dream by the Lake

WHERE WHEN HOW

Villa San Remigio is situated in Verbania Pallanza, on the Piedmontese shore of Lago Maggiore. From Milan, take state highway A8 Milano-Laghi, which then joins with A26 going towards Sesto Calende-Gravellona Toce. Exit at Casello di Verbania, which is about six miles from Verbania Pallanza.

The gardens of Villa San Remigio are on the street of the same name (which merges into the lakeside road Vittorio Veneto), at the summit of the hills of Castagnola in Verbania Pallanza. The main entrance is right next to the entrance to Villa Taranto.

Visits are by guided tour only and can be arranged through the Comune di Verbania in the following ways: group reservations are available from the March to the end of October. For individuals, reservations are available during May and June, Fridays and Saturdays at 10 am; and in July, August, and September on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 10 am. The tour lasts about two hours and does not include the interior of the villa, which currently houses public offices, but it may include a visit to the Oratory next door. Call for information and reservations (tel. +39.0323.50.32.49).

The Oratorio immersed in a dense wood.
It was built between the first half of the
11th and 12th centuries. This site offers great panoramic views.

Adjacent to the gardens, the Oratory is immersed in a dense wood and offers a spectacular view of the surroundings. Its architecture perfectly reflects its Roman origin. Constructed between the first half of the 11th and 12th centuries, it is made up of two asymmetrical naves and apses. On the north side, there is a square campanile that goes back to the 11th century; a 14th-century portico runs along the façade. A precious jewel of medieval art, it is a monument worth visiting, especially for its frescoes from diverse periods, the oldest of which date back to the 11th century. For further information, call the parish of San Leonardo (tel. +39.0323.50.35.26).

From the artistic point of view, Pallanza has many important churches, including the 16th-century collegiate church of San Leonardo, and the parish church of Santo Stefano that has original Roman elements, 17th-century remodelings and a curious Roman “Alter to the Matrons” in marble.

There is also the Oratory of Saint Fabiano and Saint Sebastiano (not open to visitors) in the heart of the old suburb of Suna where one also finds the church dedicated to Santa Lucia, patron saint of stonecutters (there are many in this area). It is, after all, the land of the famous pink granite, found everywhere but particularly in Baveno, a small lakeside town worth visiting. There, you will find the notable provost church, which stands harmoniously with the baptistery, the church of Saint Gervasio and Saint Protasio, an impressive bell tower, and a long arcade that lies off the large churchyard.

Parks and Gardens

A view of Isola Bella at night.
Adjacent to the garden of San Remigio is the famous Villa Taranto. The gardens of the two villas were designed very differently; one is the handiwork of a cultured couple, the other is a classical botanical garden. However, both represent two inseparable means of echoing the natural surroundings of Lago Maggiore.

On the 50 acres of Villa Taranto, one can explore more than four miles of pathways and 20,000 species of flowers, arranged in a blend of English and Italian garden styles. (Visits can be reserved April to October, from 8:30 am until sundown. Call for further information, tel. +39.0323.55.66.67.)

The Italian garden tradition also lives on in the scenic gardens and terraces of Isola Bella and in the botanical park of Isola Madre. During visiting season, from the end of March through October, the gardens are a triumph of colors and perfumes. Call for further information (tel. +39.0323.3.05.56 or +39.0323.3.12.61). Steamship schedules are available through Navigazione del Lago Maggiore, at their offices in Arona, (Viale Baracca 1, tel. +39.0322.4.66.51).
