Ancient Puteoli

A Legacy of the Ancient Port

Pozzuoli's port, a legacy of the famous portus Julus, is still today the heart of the town's activities. The fish market fills the senses with sounds and activities that are not much different today than they were centuries ago. Housed now in a modern building in place of the quay, the market is still filled with fish that arrive at dawn, are unloaded from the typical wooden fishing boats that crowd the berths in the dockyard, and end up leaping and wriggling in wooden tanks. The fish are often sold at rock-bottom prices. The visitor can revel in a variety of traditional fish specialties offered in the many restaurants and smaller eateries throughout the area.

A Landscape Designed by Volcanic Activity

In the midst of the fiery Phlegraean Fields, the port of Pozzuoli offers up some awe-inspiring sites of its own. Visitors can walk into the crater of Solfatara volcano surrounded by steaming eruptions and boiling mud (161 Via Solfatara, open 8:30 am to one hour before sunset; entrance fee, about 4 euros; tel. +39.081.5262341). One can also tour the Mount Nuovo volcano, which offers a sweeping vista of the gulf and lakes Lucrino and d'Averno, the latter the mythological entrance to Hades (tel. +39.081.80414162, open 9 am to one hour before sunset). Guided tours are offered on Sundays, beginning at 11 am, through Le Ali di Dedalo, tel. +39.081.5266159.

Our favorite two hotels in Pozzuoli: the 4-star Grand Hotel Oasi, 253 Via Campana, tel. +39.081.3031025; double room, 56 to 258 euros; the 3-star Solfatara, 163 Via Solfatara, tel. + 39.081.5262666; double room, 103 euros.
Restaurants here are plentiful and considered an attraction unto themselves. We like: La Cucina, 19 Largo San Paolo, tel. +39.081.5269060;
Il Capitano, 10 Promenade Colombo, tel. +39.081.5262283; and
La Ninfea, on Lake Lucrino, tel. +39.081.8661326, specializing in fish and the local white wine Falangina, produced in the Phlegraean Fields; 31 to 36 euros.
